How we build complex platforms with almost no infrastructure cost
Modern free tiers are generous enough that a surprisingly complex platform can launch and grow without paying for infrastructure — by combining free static hosting, a free managed backend, and work that happens in the visitor's own browser. The skill is architecture: choosing where each piece of work happens so the free tiers carry it.
People are often surprised when we tell them that the platforms we build — with accounts, databases, progress tracking, certificates and offline access — run at almost no infrastructure cost to start. It is not a trick. It is architecture: deciding carefully where each piece of work happens.
The three free foundations
- Free static hosting for all the pages, served fast worldwide
- A free managed backend for accounts, database and storage
- The visitor's own browser doing work that does not need a server — so you use far less backend
Pushing work to the browser
A modern browser is a powerful computer. Much of what people assume needs a server — remembering progress, working offline, light calculations — can happen right in the visitor's browser. Doing that keeps the backend quiet, which keeps you inside the free tier for far longer.
Designing data to stay small
Big bills usually come from big data. If you keep what you store lean — text, not heavy files — and send large media (images, video) to free file storage or embed links rather than hosting the files yourself, your database stays tiny and free for years.
