Foundations: how search works and finding the right words
Before writing a word of content, you need to understand how Google decides what ranks, and how to find the exact phrases your audience actually types β in both English and French.
How search really works
FoundationsβΊCrawl, index, rankβ
Google does three things, and SEO is about helping with each. It crawls the web (robots follow links to discover pages), indexes what it finds (stores and understands each page), and ranks pages for a search (decides the order of results).
Everything in this course serves one of three goals: make your pages easy to crawl, genuinely the best answer so they deserve to rank, and trusted by other sites. Miss any one and you struggle.
See what Google has actually indexed
site:yourdomain.com # every page Google has indexed site:yourdomain.com/blog # just one section
- ① the approximate number of indexed pages
- ② the actual pages listed
βΊSearch intent: the real question behind the wordsβ
Ranking is not about matching words β it is about matching intent, the real goal behind a search. There are four kinds:
- Informational β "how to start a business in Cameroon" (they want to learn)
- Navigational β "MTN Cameroon login" (they want a specific site)
- Commercial β "best web agency Douala" (comparing before buying)
- Transactional β "buy solar panel YaoundΓ©" (ready to act)
βΊE-E-A-T: why trust decides rankingsβ
Google increasingly ranks on E-E-A-T β Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. It asks: does this page come from someone who actually knows, and can be trusted?
You show it by: naming real authors with real credentials, citing sources, showing genuine work and reviews, and keeping information accurate and current.
The two files that guide crawlers
Every site should serve these two small files from its root:
User-agent: * Allow: / Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
<url> <loc>https://yourdomain.com/</loc> <lastmod>2026-01-01</lastmod> </url>
- ① the Allow / Disallow rules
- ② the Sitemap line pointing to your sitemap
Run a site:yourdomain.com search (or a friend’s site) and check its robots.txt. Send your supervisor a screenshot of both and say how many pages are indexed.
Your course will not advance past this module until your supervisor confirms the exercise is done — this programme is built to be practical, not just watched.
Keyword research for our market
Core skillβΊFinding what people actually searchβ
Keyword research is discovering the real phrases your audience types, and how much competition each has. The goal is to find terms with genuine demand that you can realistically rank for.
Free tools to start with: Google autocomplete (type a phrase, read the suggestions β those are real searches), "People also ask" and "Related searches" on the results page, and Google Trends to compare interest over time and by region.
βΊKeyword research in English AND Frenchβ
Our market searches in two languages β and crucially, people do not translate their searches literally. You must research each language on its own, not translate your English keywords into French.
βΊLong-tail and local keywordsβ
Short, broad keywords ("web design") are fiercely competitive and often not worth chasing. Long-tail keywords β longer, more specific phrases β have less competition and higher intent, so they convert better.
Local keywords add a place, and they are gold for any business serving a city or region.
Build a keyword list of 10 for a real local business, grouped by search intent. Send it to your supervisor with the primary keyword marked.
Your course will not advance past this module until your supervisor confirms the exercise is done — this programme is built to be practical, not just watched.
Content and authority: ranking and earning trust
Now you turn research into pages that rank, and earn the off-page authority β the backlinks and reputation β that decides who wins. This is the heart of the course, and the part built specifically for the African market.
Content that ranks
On-pageβΊOn-page SEO: titles, headings, structureβ
On-page SEO is everything on the page itself that helps it rank. The essentials, in order of impact:
- Title tag β ~55-60 characters, main keyword near the front, your brand at the end.
- Meta description β not a ranking factor directly, but it is your ad in the results; write it to earn the click.
- One H1, then logical H2/H3 headings that structure the content.
- URL β short and readable:
/seo-cameroun, not/page?id=47.
βΊWriting content people and Google both loveβ
Great SEO content is people-first: it genuinely answers the search intent better than the competition. Cover the topic fully, answer the related "People also ask" questions, and write clearly in the readerβs real language.
Structure for the way people read online and the way AI now extracts answers: a clear direct answer near the top, short paragraphs, descriptive headings, and lists where they help.
βΊTechnical and local SEO basicsβ
A few technical foundations must be in place or nothing else works: the site must be mobile-friendly (Google indexes the mobile version, and most African users are on phones), fast (compress images, defer scripts), on HTTPS, and have a clean sitemap submitted to Google Search Console.
For any local business, the single highest-leverage move is a fully completed Google Business Profile β the listing with your map pin, hours, photos and reviews.
Write one title tag + meta description and an H1 for a real page, targeting one keyword. Send them to your supervisor for review.
Your course will not advance past this module until your supervisor confirms the exercise is done — this programme is built to be practical, not just watched.
Off-page authority and link building
The heart of itβΊWhat backlinks are and why they ruleβ
A backlink is a link from another website to yours β and Google treats it as a vote of confidence. A page with many quality votes is seen as more trustworthy and ranks higher. This off-page authority is often what separates two otherwise-equal pages.
The golden rule: quality and relevance beat quantity. One link from a respected, relevant site is worth more than hundreds from random ones. A link from a Cameroonian university or a known tech publication carries real weight; a link from a spammy directory carries none, or hurts you.
βΊWhite-hat vs black-hat: stay safeβ
Links sit on a spectrum. White-hat links are earned honestly (someone links because your content deserves it) β zero risk. Black-hat links are bought or faked (link farms, private networks, paid "followed" links) β and Googleβs SpamBrain AI now simply ignores or penalises them.
The hard truth worth internalising: bought followed links are usually worthless, not just risky. Paid placement is only acceptable when clearly marked (rel="sponsored"). Build authority the honest way β it is the only way that lasts.
βΊEarning links in the African marketβ
Honest, high-impact ways to earn authority β chosen for what actually works here:
- Local directories and citations β Afrikta, Business in Cameroon, Google Business Profile, Bing Places. These double as backlinks and local-SEO signals.
- "Built by" / client credits β a link from every client site you build.
- Original local data and guides β "State of Web and Cloud among Cameroonian SMEs" earns links no one else can offer, because no one else has the data.
- Partnerships β universities, incubators, meetups and local media.
- Journalist requests β tools like Featured.com and Source of Sources; lead with your African and bilingual expertise, which is genuinely scarce.
Find three realistic link opportunities for a local business (directories, partners, press) and send the list to your supervisor with why each is credible.
Your course will not advance past this module until your supervisor confirms the exercise is done — this programme is built to be practical, not just watched.
Measure and improve
Make it compoundβΊGoogle Search Console and Analyticsβ
You cannot improve what you do not measure. Two free tools are essential. Google Search Console shows what you rank for, how many clicks each query brings, and any technical problems. Google Analytics shows what visitors do once they arrive.
Reading Search Console
- ① total clicks
- ② total impressions
- ③ average CTR
- ④ average position
βΊTracking rankings and building a content calendarβ
SEO is a compounding game played over months. Track your target keywordsβ positions over time, your referring domains (who links to you), and your organic clicks per language. Then feed what you learn into a content calendar β a steady, planned rhythm of publishing, grouped into topic clusters (a main "pillar" page linking to supporting articles).
Open Search Console (or describe the four Performance metrics) and send your supervisor a screenshot plus one change you would make based on it.
Your course will not advance past this module until your supervisor confirms the exercise is done — this programme is built to be practical, not just watched.
